DHL Laptops and Grade 12 IT Training

In mid-2023 Bopha Chan, HR Manager of DHL Express Cambodia contacted Kidshelp on behalf of the DHL Global Freight services to ask if our school could use 10 recycled laptops which would become available later in the year. Ker Soviseth (Robert) a past scholarship student who had graduated with a degree in IT and had during his studies, worked for DHL Express, committed to support the handover of the laptops, setting up the software, passwords etc.

On 14th December 2023, 6 students from Khemara Kidshelp School together with two of our teachers, Hun Tharith and Phal Pheaktra, visited DHL where Prayag Chitraker, DHL Express Cambodia, Country Manager, and Bopha Chan, HR Manager, arranged the delivery of the 10 laptops. The students were then given a tour of DHL and each received a gift.

What did the computer donation mean to students of Khemara Kidshelp School?

One of the effects of the Covid pandemic, was that, as in the rest of the world, Cambodian universities switched many of their classes to online teaching. At the start of the new 2024 academic year, one of the major universities announced that the first two weeks of the year would be online for all new starters. The assumption was all new students would be familiar with using a computer and specifically Google Meet and Zoom.

As preparation of our Grade 12 students, for their 2025 life after school, Robert who had prepared the laptops, invited all Grade 12 students to attend the first of 4 IT training programs on Sunday, 19th May. Class started at 2:00pm and was planned to finish at 3:30pm. The class finished close to 16:15pm. By end of the class, 17 students had learned how to log on to a laptop and participate in online Google Meet and Zoom classes.

Just after the class finished, Pich Srey Neath, one of the students sent a text message to Patrick in England, who had sponsored the session “We finished our meeting. It’s good for me because I can learn to go to Google Meet and Zoom”.

In the weeks that followed there were 3 more Sunday afternoon, online training classes taught by volunteer teachers. Some students attended at KKS but others logged on from home and attended online, just as they would have to in the year ahead.
